Annual Meeting of IC Spain

The Annual Meeting of IC Spain was held at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899 on Tuesday 19th April.

The assembly took the opportunity to review a busy year of activities in 2010, and to inform members about the plans for upcoming events, such as the forthcoming 39th Potter Cup, the 3rd Robert Abdesselam Trophy. The following players were also shortlisted to receive the Jean Borotra Award:

Martina Navratilova
Not just for a spectacular career that reaped 59 Grand Slam titles (single, doubles and mixed), 163 singles titles, and endless records that will seemingly never be beaten, but also for her work for humanitarian causes, in the defence of human rights, for the elderly, animal rights and in rallying support for equality for homosexuals.

The name Martina Navratilova evokes memories of an unforgettable tennis career, that included some of the following highlights: 9 singles titles at Wimbledon, six of which came consecutively from 1982-1987, from a total of 20 including doubles and mixed. 163 singles titles (the most of any man or woman in history), winning singles and doubles 84 times at the same event, one of just three women to complete the Grand Slam, an unbeaten streak of 74 matches (the longest ever by man or woman), 109 consecutive doubles wins (the longest ever by man or woman), 227 times singles finalist, reaching 23 consecutive singles finals (another record), 1670 matches played (yet another world's best), 1111 doubles matches and more than 1450 singles matches won, first player male or female to be ranked in four different decades. In 1995 won the Principe de Asturias prize. Returned to Tour in 2000 to play doubles and mixed doubles, winning her 59th Grand Slam title in 2006 and becoming the most prolific and effervescent player on the circuit, taking on players 25 years younger than her - and beating them. In short, an enormously respected woman on and off the court whose achievements form a strong argument for the best sportsperson of all time.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario
The most important female Spanish tennis player of all time. Former world #1. During her career won four Grand Slam singles titles, six in doubles and four in mixed doubles. Entered the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007. Beat Steffi Graf in 1989 to become the youngest ever winner of the Roland Garros title. Teamed up with brother Emilio in 1990 to win the Hopman Cup for Spain. Won singles bronze medal and doubles silver (with Conchita Martinez) at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. In 1992 and 1993 won the prestigious Key Biscayne title and 1994 recaptured the French Open crown, also winning the US Open title. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta won the singles silver medal and bronze in doubles (with Conchita Martinez). Won a third Roland Garros title in 1998, in addition to the title in Sydney and reached finals in Eastbourne and Tokyo. Also awarded the Principe de Asturias prize in the same year. Winner of 5 Fed Cup title. Always remembered for her characteristic tenacity, hard work and fair-play, values that were integral to her success and continue to serve as an example to new generations of players.
