Italy wins sixth Potter Cup title
IC Italy has won the 42nd edition of the Potter Cup following a decisive 4-1 victory over France on the final day of the competition.
The Italian team was led by world senior champion Enrico Casadei, who oversaw victories over Great Britain and defending champions Spain en route to the final. The win marks the sixth time that Italy has claimed the prestigious trophy, and first since 2010.
The four-day event was held at Barcelona’s Real Club de Polo from 29th May – 1st June. Many notable senior players were in action, including former Davis Cup competitors such as Agustín Moreno. A total of eight teams from seven countries took part; IC Italy, IC France, IC Great Britain, IC Belgium, IC Ireland, IC United States of America, IC Spain and a Spanish ‘B’-team which took part in the consolation competition.
The opening day of the competition saw a special clinic for a group of players with learning disabilities led by former French Open champion Sergi Bruguera. They were joined on court by 12 Potter Cup players from various countries.
A popular tournament with participants and spectators, the Potter Cup is held in association with the Ayuntamiento de Barcelona and Catalan Council of Sport and is organised jointly by the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, Real Club de Tenis de Barcelona-1899 and the International Lawn Tennis Club of Spain.
