Anonym / domingo, 30 de octubre de 2011 / Categories: 2011 Spanish tennis honours Andrés Gimeno The entire Spanish tennis family turned out to support IC member Andrés Gimeno at a testimonial event in his honour, held at the Palau Blaugrana in Barcelona recently. Around 4,000 members of the public joined players such as Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo, Marcel Granollers and Albert Montañes at the event, which featured a clinic for children from different Catalan clubs alongside former players, before the main event; a tie-break exhibition tournament between the professional players. Gimeno was joined by the president of RCTB, Albert Agustí, and the president of the Catalan Federation of Tennis, Francesc Orriols. Also present were some of Gimeno’s esteemed peers, including Manolo Santana, Lis Arilla and Manolo Orantes, who addressed the crowds with some nostalgia. Particularly well.received was the video of the last 10 minutes of Gimeno’s victory at Roland Garros in 1972, which was projected onto the Palau’s central marker. In the sporting arena, the predictions were fulfilled with the top two players - Nadal and Ferrer, emerging to the final, which was won by the world #2 who delighted the young and enthusiastic crowd with some spectacular points.
